Abdominoplasty

Abdominoplasty is an operation involving the removal of excess loose skin and fat on the abdomen, and in some cases the stitching of herniated muscles. The procedure is often performed in women if after pregnancy there is no contraction of the skin, or in the elderly after major weight loss.

Who usually has abdominoplasty ?

Abdominoplasty is good for

  • people whose skin gives a ?flabby belly? due to previously significant fluctuations in weight, pregnancy or previous operations.
  • people with excess tissue in the abdominal fold which increases the load on the spine and gives bothersome pain.
  • people whose skin-fold and excess abdominal fat hinders daily personal hygiene.

Operation.

The operation is performed under general anesthesia. The procedure involves making incisions above the pubic symphysis, so that the scars are as hidden as possible, and then the skin-fold is under-cut above the abdominal fascia up to the costal margin of the sternum. Previously, an incision around the navel was made so that it remained in place, and at the end of the treatment the navel is sewn to the new location, but at the same height as before.

Post-operation.

Wound dressings are applied and a special flexible gown, in order to minimize swelling and help the healing process of the abdomen. After the procedure, you should start to move around as quickly as possible or as directed by your doctor. This is to speed up the recovery process and reduce the risk of forming blood clots in the lower extremities. At first you will only be able to sit upright (and this can be difficult !).

Possible complications or hazards:

  • adverse reactions to the anesthesia
  • pneumonia
  • bleeding, blood clots, bruising
  • delayed wound healing
  • fluid accumulation
  • numbness or changes in sensation
  • phlebitis, swelling
  • Adverse drug reactions

Prophylactic drugs to reduce blood clotting reduces to a minimum the risk of some complications. Additionally, the sooner the patient starts to move around the better at preventing blood clots forming. Some complications can be prevented by using appropriate medications and treatments and most of all it is important that patient complies with the Doctor's instructions.
